Feminists for Change
On May 6, YWCA Toronto hosted an exclusive film screening event featuring I Was a Teenage Feminist, by Writer/Director Therese Shechter for Turning Point Partners and friends. Together we shared laughter and personal perspectives after watching this thought-provoking documentary about why young independent women today feel uncomfortable identifying with the F-word: Feminist.
The film raised interesting questions about women’s identity and belonging.
In response, the panelists highlighted the importance of being active feminists and involved in women’s issues to ensure our significant gains don’t lose more ground. To become engaged in dialogue and advocate for change, the panelists had the following suggestions: number of ways to become active in the feminist movement:
- participating at events like this one
- share your passion for equality with friends, colleagues and family members and invite them to attend a Turning Point Partner event
- join a committee or Board committed to addressing women’s issues
Thank you, Turning Point Partners, for being feminists for change and ambassadors of YWCA Toronto.
Celebrating the difference philanthropy makes
On December 11, YWCA Toronto welcomed new Turning Point Partners and also acknowledged members who have maintained their support since the launch of the progra m three years ago.
YWCA Transitional Housing Support Worker, Heather Quirt gave a glimpse of her typical work day - from helping women complete Child Tax Benefit forms and providing TTC tokens; to providing referrals to community resources and lending a sympathetic ear. YWCA staff work directly with women to help them set goals and plan for the future.
Following the reception, guests enjoyed the poignant and hilarious play, Age of Arousal, produced by Nightwood Theatre and talk-back session with playwright Linda Griffiths.
Special thanks to XEXE Gallery, Nightwood Theatre, and Barone and Tong Catering for helping make this event a great success.
