YWCA housing issues and trends

  • Lack of affordable housing has resulted in longer stays in our emergency and transitional housing.
  • There is a significant increase in refugee claimants, particularly from Africa, who are using our emergency and transitional housing.
  • Increases in housing operating subsidies from government are not tracking inflation or adjusting for aging buildings.
  • There is an increase in women experiencing mental health problems in all our housing.
  • There is a continuing need for staff training to be able to work with the changing needs of clients, particularly in the area of mental health.
