a word about our partners
YWCA Toronto is undertaking this project in partnership with two well-managed and credible service providers: Wigwamen Incorporated and The Jean Tweed Centre.
Wigwamen Incorporated is Ontario's oldest and largest urban Native housing provider, and one of the most experienced non-profit housing corporations in the City of Toronto. Wigwamen has the following mandate:
- to provide safe, decent and affordable accommodation primarily to Aboriginal residents of Toronto, including families with children, singles, seniors, and others experiencing housing insecurities;
- to empower tenants by providing them with the tools and knowledge to maintain their housing and improve their life circumstances; and
- to deliver housing programs and services which are sensitive to the cultural values of its tenants.
Wigwamen currently owns and manages 209 family housing units located throughout the City, a 92-unit apartment building for families and singles, and a 102-unit apartment building for seniors.
YWCA Toronto has a referral agreement with Wigwamen Incorporated to help fill the 50 apartments at the YWCA Elm Centre for individuals and families of Aboriginal ancestry, including ten apartments for Aboriginal women fleeing violence. In addition, it will operate an Aboriginal Economic Centre on site which will provide services to both the tenants and the broader Aboriginal community.
The Jean Tweed Centre is the largest substance abuse and gambling treatment centre for women in the province of Ontario, and one of the largest in Canada. The Centre has a national reputation for providing leading edge programming, and provides consultation and direction to many other agencies.
YWCA Toronto has partnered with The Jean Tweed Centre to develop mental health support services for women dealing with addiction and other mental health issues.
The unique partnership between YWCA Toronto and The Jean Tweed Centre will allow a rich blending of services and support from two organizations that bring expertise and commitment to women-centred community programming. Their combined strengths include:
- Leadership in the development and implementation of best practices for the treatment of women in relation to mental illness, substance abuse and concurrent disorders,
- Experience and leadership in creating and working within a women-centred framework,
- The two organizations’ shared vision and values, as well as prominent profiles in the broader community and a long history of credibility and integrity, and
- A demonstrated commitment to the project by collaborating right from the outset, through inception, development and implementation.
