Bergamot

BergamotIn September 2007, after over 4 years of planning and construction, YWCA Toronto opened the doors to YWCA Bergamot, a 68 unit apartment building with an early learning centre on Bergamot Avenue in north Etobicoke. Suites ranging in size from 1 bedroom to 4 bedrooms are occupied by women-led households. Two of the units are barrier-free. Rent supplements are available for all households so that the affordability and security of tenure of residents is protected.

In addition to funding from the City of Toronto for the rent supplements, the development was funded by the YWCA, private donors, the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the federal government. On-going operation of the complex is funded by the YWCA.

Community participation is encouraged that includes a commitment from incoming tenants to doing their part to maintain a healthy building community.

The building is located next to a park and near shopping and transportation. Other amenities include a playground which is shared between the childcare and the public, gardens, meeting rooms and counselling services.

Potential tenants are referred by partner agencies who work with the YWCA Community Support workers to provide support when required.

YWCA Bergamot demonstrates YWCA Toronto’s commitment to creating quality, affordable housing in which women and their children realize their dreams and move forward in their lives.
