YWCA SOAR

Seek, Obtain, Advance, Retain

YWCA SOAR is a free and unique program for women to get help to find and keep the job they desire. We invite all unemployed women who are looking for work and who are legally entitled to work in Canada to participate in our free program. Our unique program which runs for 1 – 4 weeks is tailored to fit the needs of each woman by helping her to develop a realistic career plan.

Women will:

  • PARTICIPATE in SOAR workshops best suited to their needs, based on their skills, interests and the career path they would like to follow and excel in.
  • DISCOVER their personal traits, preferences, aptitude, strength and weaknesses using a variety of career assessment tools.
  • ESTABLISH an action plan with attainable employment goals and milestones.
  • UTILIZE the SOAR Job Search Café, where we will offer them networking opportunities, motivational activities and job leads.
  • RECEIVE professional support from Vocational Intake and Assessment Counsellors and Job Developers during the program and following its completion

Women will gain:

  • clearer, more realistic long-term career direction and a greater ability to make informed decisions
  • increased self esteem
  • the ability to identify the skills necessary to get and keep a job
  • improved access to jobs
  • access to Canadian work experience and improved ability to function effectively in the workplace
  • improved communication skills
  • access to peer support groups to provide continued support for clients as they move into employment
  • new job search techniques in a supportive and professional environment

On-going support and follow-up provided for each participant to help maximize her employability skills and job retention.

we welcome all women who...

  • are unemployed
  • are working less than 20 hours per week
  • are sole support mothers
  • are in receipt of Social Assistance
  • do not speak English as their first language
  • are on EI reach back (in the last three years) or on maternity benefits (in the last five years)

program highlights

Vocational Assessment Module

  • identify the employment goal of each participant
  • create a personalized career profile
  • individualized counselling sessions with Vocational Assessment Counsellors
  • individually selected career assessment tools
  • participation in a series of self discovery workshops aimed at enhancing "soft skills"

Employability Enhancement Module

  • employment preparation techniques
  • job search, job matching and job maintenance workshops
  • evaluation of progress on the implementation of return-to-work action plans

Job Search Café | A Networking & Support Group:

  • networking opportunities/events
  • identification of new job leads and employment opportunities
  • open forums for sharing and receiving feedback on job search progress
  • motivational activities
